The Worst Footwear Trend of 2018

Updated: Jan 30, 2019

Every year new fashion trends emerge, coming from high fashion runways and varied streetwear style seen across fashion captials, including, London, Paris and Milan. With 2018 coming to an end the best and worst of 2018 fashion has left us both dazed by the creativity of designers around the world, and reeling at controversial trends.

Ultimately one of the worst received trends of this year has been the clear boots and shoes trend. Despite providing an edgy element to an outfit, and pairing with practically anything, the clear footwear trend is neither practical or classy. Labelled as tacky, the trend has also seen practicality issues with condensation, foot sweat and the bare feet of strangers being paraded across the streets.

Showcased by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, the PVC shoes took off in major cities as an obscure and unique trend, with cheaper versions of the invisible footwear released by high street brands.

Since its original introduction as a 2018 trend, the design has evolved, with the clear shoes appearing in virtually every colour, with added elements of detailing and embellishments from high fashion designers including, Dolce & Gabbana, Yeezy, Gianvito Rossi and Alexander Wang.

One bonus that can be said for the footwear is the endless opportunities for pairing, working with practically any design or outfit the footwear provides endless opportunities for coordination.

With designer price tags for the invisible shoes varying from £300 to over £1000 the clear footwear trend has certainly infiltrated the high profile fashion brands and despite the controversial opinions, the trend will be remembered as a mainstream fashion staple for 2018, despite whatever the future is, for the PVC footwear.
