Their latest vision is framed by the unrest and turmoil within humantiy that has been experienced politically across the globe. Modéle spoke to SYRA J. founder Shery Lau all about the new collection how she expresses herself through fashion, read all about it below...

Firstly, tell me all about your AW20 collection; the themes and inspirations...

The AW20 collection came to life during a turning point for humanity: a time when multiple cities across the globe were experiencing waves of political and civil turmoil, and when parts of the world were enduring the repercussions of historical turning points such as Brexit or the US-Sino Trade War. This collection also includes of wide selection of shapely pants and skirts to coordinate. The aim was to capture the dynamic energy of what it feels like to be a woman in a 21st century metropolitan city. These details are a reminder for all women to be strong and stand up for themselves against all adversity. The dramatic, strong shapes are a manifestation of the strength inside every woman.

Can you describe your creative process, from inspirations to actually making the garments?

I’ve seen how fashion can transform a woman. How the right fit, the extra pop of colour, or the lushness of a pattern can give her confidence, renew her passion, brighten her mood etc. Through fashion, I’m helping to create a world where women can simply look in the mirror and be reminded of their strength and potential. I’ve also seen how fashion can connect people with the same mission, passion, ambition and values. Fashion brings people together without threatening to tear each other down. It is the centre of a community where women lift each other up in spite of any differences.

SYRA J. has very selective taste in the fabrics we used; obviously we aim for quality, but every art-inspired pattern is handpicked for our collection, as we believe each fabric has a different story to tell. Each piece of clothing is then further inspired by the fabric it will be made in.

Tell me about your passion for women empowerment through fashion.

I am passionate about doing my part to help women of all ages embrace their unique beauty.

You talk of fashion being an art form of expression. What made fashion your chosen form of self-expression?

This goes back to my mother, who always encouraged and supported my love of clothes. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for art. Fashion is living art; even the most exquisite fabric and design can be lifeless when it is left hanging from a rack. But once someone puts on the clothing, the fabric is given life and meaning. Every woman and every outfit has a story to tell. The two-way relationship between a wearer and her clothes creates an undeniable chemistry that conveys these stories to the world.

What are your plans for the future with SYRA J.?

I hope SYRA J. will continue to inspire a growing community of women – women who are driven, ambitious, and full of love and passion for their work and our world – to embrace their beauty and strength.

It details dramatic yet feminine silhouettes, with cinched waists and bold shoulders acting as military accents. Inlace the globe.
