Raphaella | 'Real' EP

Shoreditch-based producer and vocalist Raphaella has released her new four-track EP ‘Real’. After only one week of being released, ‘Real’ has received astounding critical acclaim from the likes of Paper and Fault magazine.

After graduating from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, Raphaella’s career has taken off and she has successfully worked with huge industry names such as Gorgon City, MNEK, Anne-Marie, Wilkinson and many more. The ‘Real’ EP demonstrates the sheer talent recognised by those artists over the years.

Anybody who has listened to ‘Real’, will understand the EP clearly cries the deep-rooted feelings associated with heartbreak but equally channels the humble optimism of overcoming anguish that you never thought would fade. The ‘Real’ EP thrives as it simply displays a variety of sounds that amalgamate into each other and create the perfect composition for a break-up record. The dynamic opening track ‘Closure’ featuring Nambyar, an alternative R&B artist based in Amsterdam, uses punchy vocals intertwined with elongated synths and broken down piano chords to create a poignant but formidable start to the EP. The EP transitions upward through songs ‘Alright’ and title track ‘Real’ to end with short but sweet ‘My My’ which finalises the EP with self-assurance and poise.

When speaking about the release of ‘Real’, Raphaella explains “Real is really about wanting to find someone that makes you feel something real again. I think after major heartbreak it’s easy to feel numb and think in some way you’re broken eternally. But it’s amazing how in the most random and unlikely of places there’s a switch that can suddenly turn back on again, and just like that - all the blood rushes back to every inch of your body and you’re able to feel again. The whole EP follows that narrative of getting over a past relationship and seeking ‘Closure’, being ‘Alright’ and coming to terms with it, finding someone new who makes you feel something ‘Real’ again when you thought you couldn’t, and ‘My My’ which is me saying I’m ready to love again.” The EP was part recorded in Amsterdam with opening track ‘Closure’ being a collaboration with Amsterdam native Nambyar and the remaining three tracks were recorded in her Shoreditch studios. Raphaella says she wanted to “create an off kilter analogue and lo-fi production soundscape, so mixed both live guitar which I heavily effected, my Prophet 6, chopped up and altered audio and digital synths throughout.”

The ‘Real’ EP comes after the success of Raphaella’s latest feature, co-write and vocal production for ‘One Night’ with MK & Sonny Fodera, which has received significant support from BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM and has 19 million Spotify streams alone. Behind the scenes, Raphaella has also been working on a project producing for Little Mix’s upcoming album including their latest single ‘Break Up Song’. Not to mention that Raphaella’s solo releases over the past couple of years including collaborations and guest features have earned 7 figure streams on Spotify and support from radio DJ’s Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Mistajam. Her solo releases have also seen critical acclaim from tastemakers Billboard, MTV, Wonderland, HUNGER and Clash.

In the coming months, we hope to see continued praise for Raphaella’s new EP and when our lockdown has lifted and artists are able to continue touring, Raphaella is sure to be one of the hottest artists in the pop scene.
